Any player in their arbitration years (1st to 6th) can be unprotected at any time (except as detailed in 7.2). When a player is unprotected they are paid no salary, but are also ineligible to be on your ESPN roster or contribute towards the standings.
In the majority of circumstances unprotected arbitration eligible players can be protected by the team which holds rights to the unprotected player.

7.7 Unprotecting 1st - 6th Players Who Are The Property of One of Your Two IRL Teams
7.8 Format for Unprotecting Players
7.1.1 Players Eligible to be Protected
An unprotected arbitration eligible (1st - 6th year) player may be protected by the team who holds the rights to that player if:
1) the team retains rights to that player for the remainder of the day (see 7.1.2), and either
2) the player is a 1st year player who is not eligible to be drafted in the next league Amateur Draft, or
3) the player is a 2nd - 6th year player.
7.1.2 Determining Rights to a Player in their Arbitration Years In Relation to a Real Life Roster Move
If rights to a newly-protected arbitration eligible player are lost (ie due to a real life trade or player release) before 11:59PM ET of the same day on which they are protected then the protect transaction is voided.
The agreed reference point for determining the timing of a real life move will be the first report of said move by any of the following media:
"Sending" team's official Twitter feed
"Receiving" team's official Twitter feed
@mlb
@mlbrostermoves
The MLB.com transactions page (found via the 'Players' drop-down on the MLB.com homepage)
7.2.1 4th - 6th Players' Protect Limit
A 4th - 6th year player may only be protected 3 times in the same regular season before their salary is guaranteed for the remainder of the season. From this point forward they may not be unprotected, although they are available to be traded. Protects made before opening day do not count towards the limit.
7.2.2 Management of 4th - 6th Players' Protect Limits
The number of times a player is protected in the same season is cumulative over the course of a season, regardless of which team(s) they are protected by (ie if Team A protects the player, then unprotects the player, then the player is traded in real life and the new Team B holding rights to the player protects him then that is that player's 2nd protect of the season).
Any player whose salary has been guaranteed via this method will be identified as such on their team's roster.
Every 4th-6th player's number of protections during a season resets to 0 at the end of the fantasy season.
7.3 Format for Protecting Players
To protect a player you must list the name and contract details (year of arbitration and salary) of the player(s) that you wish to protect in the 'Roster Moves' thread, specify that you are protecting them, and show the overall salary change to your roster.
If they are a 4th - 6th year player you must specify how many times they have been protected during the current season. If they have been protected for the 3rd time you must specify that their salary is now guaranteed for the remainder of the season.
7.4 TTC Confirmation of Player Protects
TTC members will be required to confirm each player protect in a timely manner. They must ensure that the player name spelling, position, arbitration year and salary are accurate, and (as per rule 7.1.2) confirm that the protecting team retained rights to any player protected until 11:59PM ET of the day of the protect transaction.
One confirmation is required for any player protect. TTC members may not confirm their own protects.
Newly protected players must not be rostered on the a roster page or on the scoring website until the confirmation(s) have been received (refer to rule section 6.3 to see the penalties for accumulating stats with ineligible players).
7.5 Players Eligible to be Unprotected
A protected arbitration eligible (1st - 6th year) player may be unprotected by the team currently rostering that player if:
1) the player is a 1st - 3rd year player, or
2) the player is a 4th - 6th year player whose contract has not been guaranteed as per rule 7.2.
7.6 Unprotecting 1st - 6th Players Who Are Not The Property of One of Your Two IRL Teams
If you unprotect a 1st - 6th year player who is not the property of one of your two IRL teams then the rights to that player revert to the team in this league that is affiliated to the player's new IRL team.
7.7 Unprotecting 1st - 6th Players Who Are The Property of One of Your Two IRL Teams
If you unprotect a 1st - 6th year player who is the property of one of your two IRL teams then you retain all rights to the player. They can be protected or unprotected at any time without penalty. However, if a player is traded away from one of your IRL teams whilst unprotected then you no longer have any rights to that player.
7.8 Format for Unprotecting Players
To unprotect a player you must list the name and contract details (year of arbitration and salary) of the player(s) that you wish to unprotect in the 'Roster Moves' thread, specify that you are unprotecting them, and show the overall salary change to your roster.
You may optionally state which team their rights revert to.
