There is one thing all fantasy owners hate and its INJURIES (a close second is finding out that one of your players is taking a leave of absence and you still have to pay the salary for that player even though the real MLB team does not). However as much as I like what MLB is trying to do with the home plate collision rule, I'm worried it leaves too much open to the interpretation to the umpires (Did the ball arrive there before the runner? Was the catcher allowed to block the plate? Should the run count?). This can have repercussions especially if runs and RBIs are disallowed because of an umpire misinterpreting this new rule.
Anyone else concerned? Or does the idea of keeping catchers healthy outweigh any possible stat correction (right or wrong).

I've been accused of advocating the 'pussification' of baseball, but I think that the safety and health of players is thoroughly neglected by MLB. I'm all for the safety of players, the rest will work itself out.

I'm giants fan and that hit on Buster was one of the worst things I've ever seen in my life. This rule is a no brainer to me.

I still think there will be many collisions until some people get fined or suspended. Also if it does.work i think you will see smaller more athletic catchers.

The hit on Buster Posey, not offense, was a wee bit the fault on Posey himself. When he dropped his leg and committed to blocking the plate (and pivot to his left to tag the runner) with that leg broke the cardinal rule of catching, stay on the balls on your feet during a home plate collision. That way when you are hit you are lifted off your fit as opposed to being driven into the dirt. But watching Posey in pain was terrible. The runner is 99% to blame because he had a clear path to the plate and went out of the way to hit Posey because he knew he would be tagged out. His only way to be called safe was to jar the ball loose (or to break his ankle).
I think a lot of catchers need to give up the plate more often and are bound by the Dallas Braden code of "That's my plate" even when the ball will reach them to make it a close play (or a remotely close play).
My framing (or poor framing of the question) was more from a fantasy perspective. Do you think this will have any implications in saving the inevitable Catcher DL trips or will the stat corrections start driving us nuts by midseason (i.e. "I would of had an RBI if that stupid umpire hadn't said that Beltre should of slid into home").
But as always I love the discussion... I also am never right...

Yeah Buster learned from it for sure, but he shouldn't have had to go through that to "learn his lesson." Catching is a ridiculous task as it is, no need for 200lb+ dudes to be barreling into them on top of it all.

Excuse me but having a 200lb+ dude barrel on top of you is the best learning experience of all. Just ask my mom.

I 2nd what Stephen said. With The advancements in research of concussions, and seeing what the NFL just went through, I think it had to be done. It's not about "wussification". It's about trying to prolong the quality of life for the players during their retirement.

But unlike the NFL they aren't responding to a concussion report they are responding to an owner who lost his star catcher for a year in a horrific home plate collision. I think they have the players long term health 1% in mind. I mean if that was the case this rule would of been implemented after the famous Pete Rose All Star Game Collision with Ray Fosse. Which destroyed a promising young catcher's career forever. Or they would get rid of chain link fences in the outfield and put up padding so outfielders don't destroy their face or dome.

This is still the same sport that let steroid use run rampant with no regard for player safety, but times are a changin' and I'm sure this is one of many changes we will see(like the padded hats that are being developed.) The steroid thing was a whole nother monster, but really player safety is in the best interest of the players and owners and fans, so really doesn't make sense to not do it. It's tough in the NFL because it's just a whole different sport, and it has made it a bit wussified, but I don't think these type of changes in baseball should do anything to deter from it's greatness.

Yeah players won't wear them yet, but I'm sure when they get it right some will. Hell not everyone in the NFL wears the advanced ones because they don't like the look/fit.

I understand that the Posey incident is what got the wheels turning for the new rule. However, I still believe all the recent concussion stories/scandals helped push the rule through. Maybe that's me being naive, but that's why I'm in favor of the rule. Full disclosure, I had to Google the Rose/Fosse Collison. Here's an excerpt from the 1st article that popped up: link... New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, chairman of the rules committee, made the announcement at the winter meetings, saying the change would go into effect for next season if the players association approved. Safety and concern over concussions were major factors — fans still cringe at the thought of the season-ending hit Buster Posey absorbed in 2011.
“Ultimately what we want to do is change the culture of acceptance that these plays are ordinary and routine and an accepted part of the game,” Alderson said. “The costs associated in terms of health and injury just no longer warrant the status quo.”...

For sure got the ball rolling, but it was bound to happen even without that hit. Even Posey himself said he isn't the reason for the rule, it had been discussed before and was in the pipeline. You see many more of the hits where the head is the main part of the body that absorbs the blow or gets hit on the dirt from the blow, and the head injuries have a lasting effect unlike an ankle which can be repaired and back to new in a year or so.
