So I read on ESPN that Patrick Connaughton who was drafted by a team in the NBA will not be allowed to play MLB this year, per the NBA team's request. Now he has been playing with the Orioles up until this point.
My question is, if he leaves baseball for a year or 2 (it sounds like after his NBA contract is up he will negotiate a clause that allows him to play both sports), do his rights stay with the Orioles?
If I protect him, and he comes back to the game, do I keep his rights or do I need to unprotect him and then reprotect him when he comes back?
Not sure I am but just curious on what the rules are on this.

If you protect him whilst he is part of the Orioles or Reds real life organisation and keep him continually protected (and don't trade him) then he is yours until he reaches free agency after his final arb year.
If at any point he is not protected by you and not part of the Orioles or Reds real life organisation then you may not protect him (unless he re-signs for one of those teams).

Any answer that has the word "whilst" just sounds more official!
