Thanks Saltman, luckily we do have a league where the admins are always looking to improve and take input from the owners. My team is a nightmare but I'm always looking to improve and I think our league is set up pretty well to allow teams like me to get better from one season to the next. We do have some tweaks coming that should improve league overall.

I think the way our league is structured everyone really could be competitive any given year. If you factor in the fact you have to be decent enough to actually accrue stats them realistically a few deals and some up and comers from the minors and you got a chance.

I idea that came to mind that could encourage people to try in the 2nd half is what about a comp round pick after the 7th round. There is nothing wrong with our current draft system IMO. We would have to get a little creative but you could award a comp round pick to most improved team in the second half. Or this may encourage tanking but a comp round pick to the lowest team in each individual category. Which after 7 rounds of regular drafting it may really be a project pick but could end up valuable one day. Just throwing my 2 cents out.

I quite like the comp round draft pick idea as another small reward that could be used to give teams out of contention something to play for. I like it quite a lot actually.
I share the concern that awarding comp picks to teams finishing bottom in a category could reward tanking (which we'd certainly like to avoid).
Do we have anything better than "most improved in the second half" which could be used as in incentive/competition for non-div winning/wild card teams to aim for?

Another option could be awarding options to release players from contracts. With a caveat that it can only be used on contracts with less than 2 years and 2.0 salary attached or something.

Almost like the NBA amnesty clause. I like that. Every team could use it once a season.

What about if you score below 50.0 you automatically pick last in the amateur draft? That would make it pretty hard to tank.

I second the comp pick idea, for most improved 2nd half.
Not a fan of the 20% on player of choice. That would really kill the value of having 30% on org guys. Bidding can already get crazy on anyone, especially elite players. Now I'm at a greater risk of losing Goldy because a team had the best 2nd half? No thanks!
That obviously applies to all org/elite guys. Just using my team as an example, and saying what I'm really thinking.

I really think the minimums we have in place take care of tanking. Which I honestly don't feel is something that anyone in this league would actively do anyway.

I disagree I think there was some very active tanking last season.

Either way, point total does not correlate to tanking. We already have a rule that under 50 puts a team under review. I don't think attaching more penalties to under 50 is entirely fair. I had 80 points last year, did what I could to improve my team(maybe I'm not the best decision maker in the world, but I tried). I'm at 38.5 now. I would be very discouraged to continue to try and improve my team if I was penalized.

The 50 point rule (along with the revision to the draft pick order) was introduced to stop the sort of tanking that the previous rules allowed/encouraged. The potential repercussions of failing to achieve the 50 point minimum are severe, and in my view there is no further punishment or incentive that could really be added to that boundary. miggitymatt - I hear you on your concerns about the bonus 20%. I think that is a valid concern, and is strong enough that that 'reward' be removed from consideration. To summarise: At this point I think we have a couple of potential rewards that could be awarded to "non-contenders" to help spice up the season for those who might not necessarily have anything else to play for. They are: 1) some sort of draft pick reward 2) a possible contract drop allowance So far I believe the only logical or realistic measure against which these rewards could be achieved is the biggest point score increase between the all-star break and the end of season. Does anybody have any other suggestion as to what we could use here instead? Or do we think this is suitable? The focus should be encouraging teams to perform well rather than discouraging tanking or punishing those who are struggling with performance.

I like the draft pick compensation myself. I would put my vote towards that idea.

I like the contract drop allowance. But I think that should be more of a league wide thing. Not really keen on giving anyone a tangible reward of any kind for sucking less.
